Shams Inati

Professor of Islamic Philosophy, Villanova University

Shams Inati is Professor of Islamic Philosophy at Villanova University, with particular specialization in Ibn Sina (Avicenna), metaphysics, and the problem of evil. She is also a poetess and a song writer; a public speaker; and an advocate of human rights and world peace based on justice.

After receiving her BA from the American University of Beirut in philosophy and history, she moved to the United States to complete her Ph.D. in Islamic philosophy with the renowned scholar George Hourani at SUNY Buffalo.

Dr. Inati is the author of nine books, including Ibn Sina and Mysticism, The Problem of Evil, and Ibn Sina’s Physics and Metaphysics, as well as numerous articles, which cover a wide range of issues in Islamic philosophy and Arabic thought. She is the recipient of a number of honors, grants, and fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship, a U.S. Department of Defense Grant, an Andrew Mellon Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant, and a SUNY Intercampus Fellowship. Dr. Inati’s greatest love is working with her students and enabling them to become objective thinkers and productive members of the global community.
