Programs

You can study the Middle East and its languages at Penn in a variety of ways.  The Middle East Center offers a cross-disciplinary undergraduate Major/Minor in Modern Middle Eastern Studies. Joint degrees between disciplines are possible (e.g., History or Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations). The Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business and the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies offer special joint B.A. and M.A./M.B.A. programs from the School of Arts and Sciences and the Wharton School. Students at the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania may pursue the Certificate of Study in Middle East and Islamic Studies. The Middle East Center itself does not currently offer any M.A. or Ph.D. programs.

A wide variety of Middle East languages are taught at Penn, including Arabic, Hebrew, Akkadian, Aramaic, Persian, Turkish, and others.  Most of these are offered through the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.  More information on the Arabic Language program can be found here.
