Deniz Türker Cerda

Assistant Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture, Rutgers

Deniz Türker is an Assistant Professor of Islamic art and architecture at Rutgers-New Brunswick, who specializes in late-Ottoman and Turkish visual and material cultures. She received her B.A. in History of Art from Yale College (2005), her M.A. from MIT (2007) and her Ph.D. from Harvard (2016). Before joining the art history faculty at Rutgers, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge (2016-2019).  Her forthcoming book The Accidental Palace: The Making of Yıldız in Nineteenth-Century Istanbul (PSUP, 2023) traces the architectural and landscape history of Yıldız, the last Ottoman palace in Istanbul. She also has a sustained interest in the history of Islamic art collecting (especially in the nineteenth-century Ottoman and Egyptian domains). Her next project is centered on Yıldız Moran’s photographic practice in the context of Anatolia’s rediscovery by Turkish humanists in the 1950s.
