Barbara Romaine has been teaching and translating Arabic for nearly thirty years. She has received two NEA fellowships in translation, one of which supported her work on Spectres, the novel by Egyptian writer Radwa Ashour. In 2011, Spectres placed second in the Saif Ghobash Banipal International Translation Competition. Her most recent translation is Sand-Catcher (2024), by Palestinian novelist Omar Khalifah. She also translated Waiting for the Past (Syracuse University Press, 2022) by Iraqi author Hadiya Hussein. Barbara has taught at institutions including Villanova University, Princeton, Swarthmore, UPenn, and NYU. She continues to serve as a thesis reviewer for the Master's Degree in Translation and Interpretation at NYU.
