Barbara Romaine

Barbara Romaine has been teaching and translating Arabic for almost thirty years.  She has held two NEA fellowships in translation, one of which was for her work on Egyptian novelist Radwa Ashour’s Spectres.  In 2011, Spectres placed second in the annual Saif Ghobash Banipal international translation competition. Her latest translation is Waiting for the Past (Syracuse University Press, 2022), by the Iraqi novelist Hadiya Hussein. She has taught at Villanova University, Princeton, Swarthmore, and UPenn, among other institutions. She is currently adjunct faculty at NYU, where she serves as a thesis reviewer for the Master's Degree in Translation and Interpretation.
