Shelby Justl

Lecturer, Critical Writing Program

Dr. Shelby Justl is a lecturer in the Critical Writing Program. Her courses focus on archaeology and the ancient Egyptian world including such topics as Egyptomania, pseudo-archaeology, and world mythology. She has a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania and a MA with distinction in Egyptology from the University of Liverpool. Her PhD dissertation research concentrated on the administration and control of the ancient Egyptian semiprecious stone industry; in acquisition, quarrying, processing, and distribution. Dr. Justl is also an active Penn Museum educator and program developer teaching interactive virtual and on-site workshops on ancient Egyptian daily life, archaeology, experimental archaeology, and cultural heritage to schools, retirement communities, and rehabilitation programs. She participated in several Penn Museum expeditions to Abydos, Egypt and recently translated and published an unearthed ostracon in the Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt.
