James studies archaeology and usually spends his summers in the field working underwater. He has participated in harbor and shipwreck surveys and excavations in Turkey, Sicily, and Greece. His research focuses on economy, trade, and agriculture in Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean more broadly during the transition from the Late Roman to Early Islamic periods.
