Gareth's research looks at language education as a window into the changing nature of class and identity politics in the Middle East and North Africa. His dissertation is an ethnography of Morocco's new language policies from the perspective of teachers working in an historically multilingual community. His research brings together linguistics, anthropology, education, and Middle East Studies. 

His other interests include: sociolinguistics in North Africa, Tamazight language education, social media in North Africa, and the labor politics of teaching.
