Jake Wumkes

PhD Candidate in Religion, Temple University

Jake Wumkes is a PhD Candidate in the Religion department at Temple University. His scholarship focuses on the critical theory of religion and secularism, with an emphasis on the co-imbrication of modern concepts of race and religion as elements of liberal political theology. He has recently published an article in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, which argues that the materialist epistemology undergirding modern science and the sovereignty of the modern state are implicated in the development of liberal concepts of corporeal difference between the "civilized" and the "uncivilized" self. In general, his work seeks to draw on the epistemological and moral resources of the religions of the Global South in an effort toward the decolonization of knowledge and a critique of secular modernity. His dissertation seeks to expand on the epistemological dimensions of the War on Terror and the racialization of Muslims as functions of a Euro-American imperial tradition.
