Brooke Bakan is pursuing an MSEd in Intercultural Communication at Penn’s Graduate School of Education, in the Educational Linguistics division. She is studying Kurdish (Kurmanji) during the 2021-2022 academic year as a FLAS Fellowship recipient. Before coming to Penn, Brooke worked in language education for five years, primarily as an English teacher in Turkey and an international student advisor in the U.S. Her research interests include critical discourse analysis and language ideologies in Kurdish, Turkish, and English learning contexts. Her master’s thesis draws on micro-ethnographic fieldwork to analyze the correlations between communicative practices and ideologies in a virtual Turkish language program.
